YWCA South Florida Statement on Roe v. Wade

It’s official, the United States Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, ending 50 years of federal abortion protection.

This means that the decision is now left up to each state, with 13 already having “trigger laws” on the books that make abortion illegal immediately once federal protections are removed.

As we all take unimaginable steps back in time, we will not allow this judgment to stop our resolve to empower women across South Florida and to advocate for the fundamental right to safe health care.

YWCA stands in solidarity with every single person negatively impacted by this decision, especially people of color and marginalized communities who will be disproportionately impacted. All people deserve the freedom of bodily autonomy and the right to make their own health care and family-planning decisions. The right to decide when and how to become a parent is undoubtedly a basic human right.

We are committed to navigating the current state of affairs in the coming days and weeks together. We are a partner with our community and we recognize the importance of education, economic freedom, and health and safety following today’s ruling.

The gravity of this decision and the ripple effect it will have across the lives of millions in this country is profound. We are here, South Florida. We are with you and will be by your side as we carry the weight of this unfathomable ruling.
