Beyond the Boulevards - Black Miami's History
This Black History Month, YWCA South Florida invites you to dive deep into Miami's Black history with us. Beyond the boulevards lie stories of segregation walls and thriving neighborhoods, of protests that changed our beaches and of a cultural legacy that still shapes our city today.
Through February, we'll explore:
Foundations of Segregation: How Jim Crow laws carved through Miami's neighborhoods, creating boundaries that shaped our city's development and communities
Communities Lost & Found: The golden age of Overtown as the "Harlem of the South," where culture thrived, and Black businesses flourished
Wade-Ins to Sit-Ins: The brave civil rights protests at South Florida beaches that challenged segregation
Legacy & Memory: There is no Miami without Black History, and despite past and present cultural erasure, this legacy continues to shape our city
Join us on Instagram each week as we uncover these powerful stories that shaped Miami.
