Stories That Matter: Black Motherhood, Breastfeeding, and the Fight for Equity
In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, YWCA South Florida proudly hosted a special community screening of Chocolate Milk: The Documentary Series — a compelling exploration of the intersection of race, birth, and breastfeeding in America.
Through three deeply personal narratives — that of a new mother, a midwife, and a lactation professional — Chocolate Milk sheds light on the multifaceted challenges that Black women face in their maternal health journeys. The series dives into the historical and systemic barriers that have contributed to significant disparities in breastfeeding rates and overall maternal health outcomes for Black families. These stories not only educate — they humanize. They challenge us to confront uncomfortable truths and commit to meaningful change.
We were honored to partner with the Florida Breastfeeding Coalition to bring this eye-opening event to life. Our screening was made even more impactful thanks to the presence of key community advocates and organizations including The Children’s Movement of Florida, United Way Miami, Children’s Services Council of Broward, and the Miami-Dade County Commission for Women.
After the film, attendees came together for a powerful conversation around equity in maternal and infant care. We discussed the need for more culturally respectful healthcare systems, increased access to breastfeeding support, and greater representation of Black birth workers — all essential steps in closing the gaps in care and outcomes for Black mothers and babies.
This event served as more than just a screening — it was a call to action. A reminder that improving Black maternal health requires that we listen to lived experiences, learn from community-rooted solutions, and act collectively to dismantle the structures that perpetuate health inequities.
We are deeply grateful to everyone who joined us in solidarity, and to those who continue to champion the health, dignity, and autonomy of Black mothers and birthing people.
